Serrano Middle School

7th Grade Math

August 3, 2020

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

Welcome to the 2020/2021 school year. Distance learning can be stressful for all these involved. We at Serrano have been working hard to prepare for this year.  We are asking for your assistance in helping your student achieve success.  We believe that every student who is willing to learn can excel if given clear, logical instruction, and the student is willing to put forth the effort, practice, and study time needed to master the material. Academic success requires perseverance, determination, and an unwillingness to settle for mediocre on the part of all three important components of the learning process: the student, the parent, and the teacher.  With the commitment to excellence from all three of these critical components, mathematic mastery is certain to be achieved. Please feel free to come in anytime to see what we are doing in our math class this year.

We believe that every student has the right to learn in the classroom and that no student has the right to prevent other students from learning.  Therefore, we ask that you please discuss the classroom expectations with your student.  We will do our best everyday to provide a positive learning environment for your student.

Expectations of a Scholar

  1. Be on time: Be on time to schedules Zoom sessions.

  2. Be Prepared: You should come with a charged iPad, pencil, pen, paper, notebook, and a positive attitude.

A positive attitude makes a big difference in your academic success.

  1. Be Respectful: Treat others as you would expect them to treat you. Treat all classroom materials, resources, and space with respect. F

  2. Be present: You need to attend all Zoom sessions as an active participant in class discussions, activities, and assigned tasks.

Expectations of a Teacher

1. Be on time: I will be on time for class each day greeting scholars as they enter each Zoom session.

2. Be Prepared:  I will be prepared for class everyday with a well-designed lesson. I will analyze scholar’s mathematical misconceptions and create lessons to fill those learning gaps. I will return all assessments in a timely manner.

3) Be respectful: I will create a fair and safe learning environment by consistently enforcing all school wide expectations. I will keep your parent/guardian informed of successes and areas of struggle both academically and behaviorally. I will expect that all students will learn at high levels.

4) Be present:  I will seek to actively engage scholars in their learning and facilitate their understanding of the content.

Homework

Homework in this class is not an option but a requirement. Your student’s success in this class will depend largely on the amount of time spent on reviewing learned concepts. Homework will be assigned weekly.  The purpose of homework is for students to practice skills covered in class and to continue to review concepts that have been taught in class.

Math Resources

      1.  Notebook- students need to review their notes nightly

      2.   How to videos on math webpage: serranomsmath.wixsite.com/math

CLASS SYLLABUS AND GRADING SCALE

COMMON CORE 7TH GRADE MATHEMATICS

2016-2017

Course Overview: This is a 7th grade common core mathematics class. The 7th grade common core mathematics course focuses mainly on these five domains:

Number Sense; Expressions and Equations; Ratios and Proportions; Geometry; and Statistics and Probability.

Grading Policy: We use a standards based grading system therefore, 100% of your grade will come from assignments that show how much you have learned and can demonstrate on your own.

Grading Scale

3.6 - 4  = Exceeding the Standard (A): After initially demonstrating mastery of the standard, this scholar can make conclusions about the standard based on information not explicitly stated during classroom instruction. This scholar can use the language of the discipline associated with the standard verbally and in written form.  The student has exceeded the achievement standard and demonstrates advanced progress toward mastery of the knowledge and skills in mathematics needed for likely success in entry-level, credit-bearing college coursework after high school.

NOTE:  Getting all the questions correct on a proficient level assessment does NOT demonstrate mastery at an exceeding the standard level.

3.2 - 3.59 Standard Met (B): The student has met the achievement standard and demonstrates progress toward mastery of the knowledge and skills in mathematics needed for likely success in entry-level, credit-bearing college coursework after high school. Mastery and understanding of all components of the standard are consistently and regularly demonstrated.

2.0 - 3.19 = Standard Nearly Met (C): Mastery and understanding of the standard is often demonstrated. This scholar has demonstrated mastery of most of the standard.  The scholar still has some small holes in their understanding, but they are well on their way to being proficient.

The student has nearly met the achievement standard and may require further development to demonstrate the knowledge and skills in mathematics needed for likely success in entry-level, credit-bearing college coursework after high school.

0.5 - 1.99 = Standard Not Met/Not Passing (D/F): The student has not met the achievement standard and needs substantial improvement to demonstrate the knowledge and skills in mathematics needed for likely success in entry-level, credit-bearing college coursework after high school. The scholar might, for example, be able to define a word or choose the correct shape related to a geometry concept, but the scholar is unable to use that knowledge to complete the task or problem.

0 = Work was not submitted.
